最近比较热闹的就是一位留学生的毕业演讲,当然,还是看到全文或许才会有自我的判断吧?但无论如何,留学低龄化已经是个不争的事实,豪门富贵的子女大抵在海外求学也是不争的事实。

美国马里兰大学的一位华人毕业生,被选为学生代表上台演讲,某些媒体如《北美留学生日报》,给她贴标签说涉嫌辱华。这位同学在演讲中赞美了美国的言论自由,提到了中国的雾霾。

上个世纪80年代,中国民间曾经批判走出国门的开放者,说他们认为外国的月亮比中国圆。看今天的讨论,在观念和修辞上,并没有什么突破。

Fiveyearsago,asIstepofftheplanefromChina,andlefttheterminalatDallasAirport.Iwasreadytoputononeofmyfivefacemasks,butwhenItookmyfirstbreathofAmericanair.Iputmymaskaway.

Theairwassosweetandfresh,andoddlyluxurious.

Iwassurprisedbythis.IgrewupinacityinChina,whereIhadtowearafacemaskeverytimeIwentoutside,otherwise,Imightgetsick.

Forsixdays,thecitywasinchaosascitizenstooktothestreets.

Iwasshocked,Ineversawsuchtopiccouldbediscussedopenly.

Theplaywasmyfirsttasteofpoliticalstorytelling,onethatmakestheaudiencethinkcritically.

Ihavealwayshadaburningdesiretotellthesekindsofstories,butIwasconvincedthatonlyauthoritiesownthenarrative,onlyauthoritiescoulddefinethetruth.

However,theopportunitytoimmersemyselfinthediversecommunityattheUniversityofMarylandexposedmetovarious,manydifferentperspectivesontruth.

IsoonrealizedthathereIhavetheopportunitytospeakfreely.

Myvoicematters.

Yourvoicematters.

Ourvoicesmatter.

Civilengagementisnotataskjustforpoliticians.IhavewitnessedthiswhenIsawmyfellowstudentsmarchinginWashingtonDC,votinginthepresidentialelectionandraisingmoneyforsupportvariouscauses.

Ihaveseenthateveryonehasarighttoparticipateandadvocateforchange.

Iusedtobelievethatoneindividualparticipationcouldnotmakeadifference,buthereweare,UnitedTerps.

Together,wecanpushoursocietytobemorejustopenandpeaceful.

Classof2017,wearegraduatingfromauniversitythatembracesaliberalartseducationthatnurturesustothinkcritically,andalsotocareandfeelforhumanity.

Weareequippedwiththeknowledgeofvariousdisciplinesandwearereadytofacetothechallengesofoursociety.

Someofusmaygotograduateschool,someusmaystepintoprofessionsandsomeofusmaybeginajourneyofexploration.

Butnomatterwhatwedo,remember,democracyandfreespeechshouldnotbetakenforgranted.

Democracyandfreedomarethefreshairthatisworthfightingfor.

Freedomisoxygen.Freedomispassion.Freedomislove.
